A Little Background on Powell
This community was named Middlebury when it was first settled in 1801 because a lot of those settlers were coming from Middlebury, Connecticut.
In 1857, Judge Thomas Powell established the community’s first post office, and residents decided to adopt his name. Powell was officially incorporated in 1947.
The population remained relatively small and mostly rural until the late 1980s, when Columbus’s suburban sprawl reached Powell. This led to exponential growth, with the population jumping from 400 to 6,000 in less than 20 years.
Today, most residents will tell you that the general Powell area is comprised of the incorporated City of Powell as well as the adjoining unincorporated areas of Liberty and Orange townships. While Powell is well north of the city of Columbus, it has easy access to the "Scenic Byway" called 315 or Olentangy River Road, which takes you quickly to the 270 Outerbelt, the OSU campus or Downtown Columbus. This easy access, along with the excellent schools and quality of life, have made Powell a very popular executive "bedroom" community. Liberty Township, in which Powell is located, is considered to be one of the wealthiest townships in the state of Ohio.
